Einladung zum 8. Baker McKenzie Debate Club

[:en]

DKWien goes East: Pro-Am success in Sofia 2018

Another great Pro-am Team, Miri Muntean and Marina Kojic, helped to kick off DKWiens Debating season 2018/19 with an incredible success at the Sofia Open. They did however not only do an amazing job as a team, as a quick look at the tab – or better – Marinas memories below reveal.

Participating in a tournament for the first time made me realize a few things:

1. Being part of a Pro-Am team is a bless and a curse.
While I learned a lot from my very experienced and successful team partner Miri, I was afraid of letting her down or knifing our case. Miri did a great job mentoring me and after being first in round 1, I realized that after all it maybe wouldn’t go as bad, and focused on the good sides of having a Pro beside me.

2. Training is good, tournaments are better.
The feedback in Sofia helped me improve my speeches a lot, so after returning home I saw how much better I did in training sessions and also that I felt more comfortable speaking.

3.  Tournaments are great to socialize.
In the end we made it to the final, with Miri being 3rd and I being 10th best speaker of the tournament. We celebrated by enjoying great Bulgarian food with our (new) friends and spending the time before our flight back walking around the beautiful city of Sofia.

[:en]VIV 2017

100 Participants from 15 Nations joined the DK Wien for the 2017 edition of the Vienna IV. After two days in the beautiful city of Vienna and 45 outrounds, 8 teams managed to break into the Semifinal.  The four best teams were choosen by great adjudicators. They fought in a Public Final in the Ceremonial Chamber of the University of Vienna for the title of Winner of Vienna IV 2017.

The Team Dalarna A won against Debaters from London, Munich and Oxford. Johan Båge und Nick Zervoudis can now claim the title “Winners of VIV 2017”.

The best Novice speakers (under 1 year of debating experience) competed in the Novice Final. Proud Winner of the Novice Final of the VIV 2017 is the Team ELTE A, Darina Fialkina and György Nemes.

The finals were a fitting conclusion to an interesting and fun weekend of debates and socializing, with many new memories and friendships formed.

We thank all speakers and adjudicators for the great level of debates and our sponsors for making this weekend possible.

We look forward to seeing you next year.

MOTIONS

OUTROUNDS

Round 1: This house would ban religious prison rehabilitation programmes

Round 2: This house believes that ‘Morals Clauses’ should not be allowed in contracts

Infoslide: Morals clauses are clauses in employment contracts whichreserve the right to sever the contract if the employee engages in “morally inappropriate” conduct in their private lives, including their conduct on social media. These are frequently found in contracts for sports and entertainment personalities, but occasionally are also found in contracts for CEOs and other employees in more conventional businesses.

Round 3: This house would ban embedded journalism
Infoslide: Embedded journalists are attached to military units in a combat zone to allow them to report from otherwise dangerous areas. Journalists not attached to such units would normally report from designated safe areas away from the front line e.g. “The Green Zone” in Baghdad. Their continued participation in such schemes is regulated and subject to the withdrawal of credentials by the government.

Round 4: This house believes that social movements and advocacy groups should reject the support, financial or otherwise, from organisations including politicians and governments which do not share their predominant values

Round 5: This house, as China, would cease support of the North Korean regime until they give up their nuclear programme
Infoslide: China currently provides support for North Korea in the form of such things as financial and military aid and trade on favourable term for natural resources (particularly coal) as well as political support.

INROUNDS

Novice Final: This house would create a unifies history school curriculum for the European Union

Open Final: This house regrets the emergence of New Age Religions

Infoslide: “New age religions” are Westernised versions of Eastern religions which focus heavily on ‘spirituality’ rather than traditional laws and texts. They frequently identify with the same label as the traditional religion e.g. “Buddhism”.

Debates, Trains, Bicycles – Dutch Open 2012

Assume you receive an email on a Monday at about 1am offering you a team slot at a good tournament in the Netherlands, which starts off 4 days later. What would you do?
The correct answer is looking up a flight of course. At least for Melanie Sindelar and Stefan Zweiker who confirmed the slot immediately and thus hopped over to the Dutch Debating Open in Leiden, Netherlands (30th to 31st March 2012). Whether the trip was worth the flight and how Dutch the Dutch Debating Open really were can be read in this article. Continue reading

Early birds – Vienna IV 2012

Read about the Vienna IV through the lenses of last year’s convener of the Vienna IV 2011, Leonhard Weese and what he has to say about the challenges of running a tournament. He also reveals how the orgcom turned a draconian punctuality into a real treat for the participants.
