Meet our delegation for Malaysia Worlds!

Curious which of our DK members are going to WUDC Malaysia 2015?
Then read on …

Meet Madlen, Melanie, Regina and Jakob! All of them are well-known faces and have been very active in the international debating circuit for a few years now.

Regina and Jakob will be our judges – so be nice to them! Both of them have quite an extensive judging and debating background, so our hopes for a judge break are high. Our Vienna A team will consist of Madlen and Melanie. You might have seen the two of them in the past few months somewhere in Europe on a tournament. Although quite a new team, they worked well together right from the start. In London, they went straight to the ESL finals of SOAS IV, in Belgrade they broke as the 2nd best team into the Semis, and coming to Cambridge, they went into the ESL final of the Cambridge IV, having defeated an excellent team from Malaysia (IIUM) and the well known Belgrade A team in the Semis. But that’s not all. They also competed in the Cambridge Women’s Open, of which they became the ESL Champions. After these events, they retracted to Vienna to gather strength and to re-emerge in Kuala Lumpur full of energy and ambition. We at DKWien are incredibly proud of our first ever all-female team to compete at the World Championships.

But enough talk. Here are the hard facts about our competitive delegation for Malaysia Worlds 2015.

We are the ESL champions of Cambridge Women’s Open 2014!

Melanie and Madlen in Cambridge

The ESL Champions of Cambridge Women’s Open and ESL Finalists of Cambridge IV 2014, Madlen Stottmeyer and Melanie Sindelar.

We are incredibly proud to announce that Melanie Sindelar and Madlen Stottmeyer are the winners of this years’ Cambridge Women’s Open in the ESL Category. They also did incredibly well on the speaker tab and were declared 5th and 8th best ESL speaker respectively. Vienna A (also their teamname for the upcoming World Championships) also broke into the semi-finals of the Cambridge IV, and, having defeated the current European Champions Belgrade A and an excellent team from Malaysia (IIUM), moved right into the ESL Final. Melanie was also declared 8th best ESL speaker of the Cambridge IV.  That was not yet all the good news coming from England last weekend, as our judge Elisabeth Vikydal broke to the ESL semi-final of the IV!
The Cambridge IV and the Cambridge Women’s Open are prestigious tournaments held on an annual basis which attract the best speakers from Europe, North America and Asia and are seen as one of the integral preparation tournaments for the upcoming World Championships in Kuala Lumpur, Malysia. Madlen and Melanie will be representing Austria in Malysia as Vienna A.

Belgrade Open 2014

DK WIEN AT BELGRADE OPEN 2014

by Ingo Bandhauer

From October 24th to October 26th 2014, Open Communication (or Otvorena komunikacija in Serbian) hosted the Belgrade Open 2014. The DK Wien delegation members (two judges, three teams) arrived separately and in groups, some of us early, others rather late. Essentially, that meant some of us could join the first socials and walk around Belgrade, others could not.

English version below.

Miri Muntean’s Fresh Impressions of Zagreb EUDC 2014

Michael Shapira and Christine Simpson, Chief Adjudicators of Vienna EUDCBetween August 18 and 24 2014 Zagreb hosted the European Universities Debating Championship. Debattierklub Wien is the only institution sending teams from Austrian universities to these annual championships. As such, Vienna teams competing for Zagreb EUDC 2014 were: Melanie Sindelar and Stefan Zweiker (Vienna A); Mark Etzel and Madlen Stottmeyer (Vienna B);  Andreas Villarreal and Christoph Jäger (Vienna C). Judges joining them were Elisabeth Vikydal, Regina Puthenpurayil, Andreas Prischl and the author Miri Muntean. Miri joined the society last year and has been one of our most talented freshers. Enjoy her insights!

Miri Muntean’s Impressions

My first EUDC was a week filled by so many things that I wouldn’t know where to start to describe it. Brilliant people, great debates, fancy buildings, entertaining socials and the burning sun are just a few things that come to my mind. I’m sure that having been part of the great (and quite large) DKWien contingent (3 teams, 4 judges, 1 volunteer) contributed a lot to the amazing time I had and everything I’ve learned in the meantime.
