Singapore Debate Open took place in the small capitalist police state from December 14th to 16th. The tournament was well organised and attracted a high class adjudication core. Let’s better not talk about the rest though. The author decided to show pictures instead. Weiterlesen…

Stefan Zweiker, our ‘DK-southern hemisphere export’ lived, studied, debated and surfed in Sydney for half a year. He joined not only the Sydney Mini from 9th to 11th Dec 2011, but also, as he was for some time resident, a debating society that is nowadays known for topping the tabs wherever possible. Read his thoughts which shortly deal with the tournament and then reveal deeper insights about debating as a Sydneysider.

Sydney does not only have a beautiful harbour, a bridge, lots of beaches and an Opera House. In terms of debating the University of Sydney Union defines the worldwide standard of excellence. |
Heaps fun with debates and stuff: Melbourne Mini starts off the Down Under Worlds Prep
2011 December 8
From December 2nd to 4th Melbourne Mini demonstrated that the world best institutions prepare for the upcoming WUDC in a fun and relaxed atmosphere, gathering 60 teams in 6 pre-rounds without the need to hype their prestige. Stefan Zweiker reports from Down Under.
The most prestigious tournaments actually take place in Australia, of course. Cambridge and Oxford can have the northern hemisphere if you like, but the Australian record in Worlds and World rankings does not play second fiddle to the British. However, I have the impression that nobody cares too much about prestige anyway. Melbourne Mini shows that the high level Worlds preparation can also be an enjoyable tournament with a relaxed schedule and lots of bar tabs.
Possibly this article will alter history a little bit (sorry, that’s an Austrian habit). The first reason therefor is that due to writing this article several days after the tournament, the author’s memories are not so detailed anymore. Two things are totally clear, however: Budapest was loads of fun and it had something to do with debating. The second reason for creativity in this story is the fact that the reader might gain access to the tournament tab. In this case it is better to tell him some good excuses and possible ways of interpretation beforehand. So be aware that not everything stated in this article has to be taken literally*.
