100 Participants from 15 Nations joined the DK Wien for the 2017 edition of the Vienna IV. After two days in the beautiful city of Vienna and 45 outrounds, 8 teams managed to break into the Semifinal.  The four best teams were choosen by great adjudicators. They fought in a Public Final in the Ceremonial Chamber of the University of Vienna for the title of Winner of Vienna IV 2017.

The Team Dalarna A won against Debaters from London, Munich and Oxford. Johan Båge und Nick Zervoudis can now claim the title “Winners of VIV 2017”.

The best Novice speakers (under 1 year of debating experience) competed in the Novice Final. Proud Winner of the Novice Final of the VIV 2017 is the Team ELTE A, Darina Fialkina and György Nemes.

The finals were a fitting conclusion to an interesting and fun weekend of debates and socializing, with many new memories and friendships formed.

We thank all speakers and adjudicators for the great level of debates and our sponsors for making this weekend possible.

We look forward to seeing you next year.

MOTIONS

OUTROUNDS

Round 1: This house would ban religious prison rehabilitation programmes

Round 2: This house believes that ‘Morals Clauses’ should not be allowed in contracts

Infoslide: Morals clauses are clauses in employment contracts whichreserve the right to sever the contract if the employee engages in “morally inappropriate” conduct in their private lives, including their conduct on social media. These are frequently found in contracts for sports and entertainment personalities, but occasionally are also found in contracts for CEOs and other employees in more conventional businesses.

Round 3: This house would ban embedded journalism
Infoslide: Embedded journalists are attached to military units in a combat zone to allow them to report from otherwise dangerous areas. Journalists not attached to such units would normally report from designated safe areas away from the front line e.g. “The Green Zone” in Baghdad. Their continued participation in such schemes is regulated and subject to the withdrawal of credentials by the government.

Round 4: This house believes that social movements and advocacy groups should reject the support, financial or otherwise, from organisations including politicians and governments which do not share their predominant values

Round 5: This house, as China, would cease support of the North Korean regime until they give up their nuclear programme
Infoslide: China currently provides support for North Korea in the form of such things as financial and military aid and trade on favourable term for natural resources (particularly coal) as well as political support.

INROUNDS

Novice Final: This house would create a unifies history school curriculum for the European Union

Open Final: This house regrets the emergence of New Age Religions

Infoslide: “New age religions” are Westernised versions of Eastern religions which focus heavily on ‘spirituality’ rather than traditional laws and texts. They frequently identify with the same label as the traditional religion e.g. “Buddhism”.

An Obituary on Alfred Snider

asnider

Today we had to sadly learn that Professor Alfred Snider passed away. We send our condolences to his family and friends and grieve Tuna, who was a constant force for good in the debating community and in the world.

As a professor for Forensics at the University of Vermont, Alfred Snider spread debating all over the world; often to the areas that needed it the most. He built up debating in Serbia and Kosovo as a means of reconciliation among the youth after the Kosovo war and recently fostered debating in Palestine. His wise words however were never restricted by geography. Tuna had the power to connect debaters all over the world.

DKWien owes much to Tuna’s efforts. As early as 2006 Austrian debaters met Tuna in nearby Slovenia, where he was one of the driving forces behind the IDAS tournament. His efforts in the region spread and helped us develop as we were always very much invited to his events; a core group of DK Wien followed his call to a debate camp in rural Serbia in 2010 and have since become some of our most accomplished debaters. Much of what we now teach our fresher’s we ourselves have learned from Tuna.  Later, our own tournament, the Vienna IV, would have not reached its international dimension without his efforts to bring the Vermont teams over the “big pond”.

Alfred Snider’s trips, tips, tweets, articles, contingents, workshops and words were a wonderful illustration of the peaceful power of debate, which no-one embodied like him. Indeed, he gave us a gift he made to so many in the world: He broadened our horizon. He brought young people to connect, to understand, to speak – be it across tables, across boundaries or across the entire world. Today the debating community has lost an important person.

May he rest in peace.

Vienna IV 2014 – Motions and tab

The Winners from Team Belgrado, Marija Simić and Djordje Jovicevic, together with the CA-Team Stefan Zweiker, Christine Simpson and Nicole Loiter.

With the OrgCom and all others involved having more or less recovered, it is now time to officially thank everyone for this year’s edition of the Vienna InterVarsity Debating Tournament!

Convened by the Dynamic Duo of Melanie Sindelar and Regina Puthenpurayil and with an outstanding CA Team – Christine Simpson, Nicole Loiter and our very own Stefan Zweiker – the tournament saw us celebrate the tenth anniversary of Austrian Debating, with nearly 100 teams from all over the world joining us for the tournament and party. Vienna IV 2014 was the biggest Intervarsity ever held in Europe.

After six rounds, challenging quarter- and semifinals and a Grand Final in the Festive Hall of the University of Vienna as well as some fun socials along the way, it was Marija Simic and Djordje Jovicevic from the team “Belgrado” (Closing Government) who took home the coveted trophy.

Following teams debated in the Finals of the Vienna IV 2014:

  • OG: Warsaw A (Karolina Partyga, Maja Łukomska)
  • OO: Vermont GW (Rebecca White, Mariel Golden)
  • CG: Belgrado (Marija Simić, Djordje Jovicevic)
  • CO: Vermont SS. (Jacob Senghas, Franny Solnick)

Congratulations to all and once again thank you for this amazing weekend! Many thanks from Debattierklub Wien to our sponsors, importantly our key partner Baker & McKenzie, the Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien, the Universität Wien, Ströck, Esarom, Red Bull, Jede Dose zählt, Wien Tourismus, and especially JEF – the young European federalists.

Goodbye from Vienna – we hope to see you in 2015!

Motions:

Final: THBT No state in any situation has the right to demand, encourage or promote its citizens to fight or die for the country

Semi final: THBT that media aimed at children should stop depicting the ‘happily ever after’ (For the purpose of the debate the ‘happily ever after means the end of a movie where the main characters end up happy in a romantic relationship)

QF: Given a machine to predict a person’s life 95% accurately, thw not use it

R1: THBT NGOS should reject sponsorship from companies whose actions are not consistent (= who do not act in accordance with) with the charities aims

R2: In situations where it is not possible to achieve both aims and the decision is upon the doctor, THBT doctors should prioritise prolonging life over the quality of that life

R3: Context slide: The current population growth in the Vienna neighbourhood of Ottakring is almost exclusively driven by immigration from beyond Austria’s borders. It ranks among the areas with the highest percentage of immigrants and is particularly popular with immigrants from Eastern Europe, the large majority of which come from the former Yugoslavia.

THBT that Vienna should devote Ottakring to immigrants from Eastern Europe (i.e.: An Eastern European ‘China Town’)

R4: THBT the US and the EU should support a Russian annexation of Crimea in exchange for an otherwise independent Ukraine.

R5: Infoslide: The Thirst Games is a reality tv show in which contestants compete against each other and battle to the death. The games continue until only one contestant remains alive, and that person wins fame, glory and riches.

Assuming participants have consented freely and in full knowledge of the risks and possible consequences, THW allow its citizens to participate in the “Thirst Games”

R6: Infoslide: For the purpose of this debate “good time tourism” refers to every form of tourism that satisfies human desires and is commonly forbidden in Western states (sex, drugs, chewing gum).

10 Years of Debating in Austria – Birthday Party

2013-12-21-11.43

Buckle up your Lederhosen, and get ready for some Schnaps! We are going to party properly Austrian style this Saturday. We Austrians love the mountains, are crazy fun-seekers and since ten years we also debate. Time to celebrate and have a good time.

Location: The Vienna IV Break Night and Birthday Party will take place at “Bergstation Tirol”, close to Karlsplatz. It’s a unique mixture between a Ski-hut and a club. Once at the Künstlerhaus, you will take the stairs down to the Bergstation – but once you’re inside, you will feel like in a hut on top of the Tyrolean mountains!

Dinner: You will be served delicious Tyrolean specialities, there will be one free drink included and a discounted drink special just for you!

Dresscode: If you do have a “Dirndl”, traditional Austrian dress or Lederhosen, you should absolutely wear them. Otherwise the dress code is anything that is red (and smart)!

Start: Dinner will start at 7pm and our volunteers will escort you to Karlsplatz from WU.

Vienna IV 2014 Surrounding Programme

Warning: If you were planning on coming to Vienna to be bored, do not read this article.

The 2014 Surrounding Programme

As a Vienna IV tradition we prefer to extend the joy of debating beyond the actual tournament. Also we think, seven days of activities should easily fit into a three day tournament. Hence, the 2014 surrounding programme features 7 days of socials, an extra debate and some great opportunities for you to see Vienna. If you’re in Vienna for Vienna IV you are very much invited to join in to the events, find more information about them in the respective Facebook Event.

All In One Place For Smart People

Add the Vienna IV Calendar as an ICAL or XML to your calendars and have all events, locations and the full tournament schedule on your smartphone. There is also an html version.
